Music Monday: Cults Video Feature

Many of you may have already heard the song “Go Outside” by Cults. I generally enjoy Cults and adore this song; it’s charming and motivating. I have been listening to it every so often for the past 6 months or so. It embodies some of my favorite song characteristics – indie pop, female singer, whimsical, etc. I recently decided to look up the music video on YouTube, (which, until this blog, was something I rarely did), and was conflicted with what I saw. As I mentioned, I feel this song is actually propelling, but this video drove both the lyrics and upbeat nature in an entirely different direction. I find it both intriguing and haunting, and thought I would share it with you. Here are the lyrics for reference:

I really want to go out
I really want to go outside and stop to see your day
You really want to hole up
You really want to stay inside and sleep the light away

I really want to go out
I really want to go outside and make it light all day
You really want to hole up
You really want to stay inside and not care where you lay

Well I know what’s good
Exactly cause I have been there before
Yeah I know what’s good
Exactly those things night cannot behold

I really want to go out
I really want to go outside and stop to see your day
You really want to hole up
You really want to stay inside and sleep the light away

I think it’s good to go out
cause if you don’t you’ll never make a memory that will stay
I think that you should wake up
I think I want to live my life and you’re just in my way

Crazy, right?! My mind would never have created a link between this song and a horrific event that makes me feel sick to my stomach. However, in some creepy way, it is interesting. I think I prefer the more inspiring version – the one that makes me want to challenge myself and live everyday to the fullest. Let me know what you think!

xoxo,

haley
